Coffee Flavorphile Style: The Highlander Grog

Posted on

I love flavorphile coffee!

Ah, coffee.  As a hospitality mom working crazy hours with two babies – one teething 5 month old, and a 19 month old – I’d pump coffee into my body intravenously if I could.  But I’d miss the FLAVOR!  The first sip of the morning is cathartic.  This week, coffee has been my BFF.  And BLESS our Director of Catering, Shelly, for my skinny latte at 3:00pm.  You have no  idea.

There are some rather phenomenal coffees these days.  I credit and thank my former boss, Judge Baker, for turning me into the coffee snob I am today.  I was her judicial admin, and decided that it was a very “admin” thing to prepare coffee for the office in the mornings.  SO I went to Target and bought a horribly crummy, leaky coffee pot and some Folger’s.  Needless to say, within a week, Judge Baker had a Gevalia subscription and a new coffee machine.

This turned into a weekly trip to the City Grocer with Josie, and an introduction to “The Coffee Wall.”  Fresh roasted beans, freshly ground, and brewed into glorious caffeinated nectar.  Going to the School of Josie on coffee, I learned ever so much.  She really opened my eyes and heart to the understanding of the religion of Coffee.  And then, there was Jon.

One day, he came into Judge’s chambers with his mug, and asked if I’d tried Highlander Grog.  It changed my life :)

Every morning this week, O has kindly brewed a pot of hair-growing Highlander Grog.  The aroma fills the house with thick sweet-syrup scent, and I ALMOST taste pancakes with each breath.  All Kaldi’s coffees that I’ve tried so far are truly divine, but this is far and away my favorite.  Click. Buy. Brew. Believe.

Mmmmmmmmaple....

I also recently tried a Peruvian micro-roasted bright brew.  *sigh* I LOVE bright brews, but my faves are still the dark roasts.  As a sucker for a delicious espresso, the dark roast preference makes sense.  It’s reminiscent of a dark, luscious 80% chocolate bar, or a throaty red Syrah.  THESE. Are a few of my favorite things…

We Will ROCK YOU!

My little brother and I went shopping for Easter Dinner, and didn’t see a ham we found to look particularly festive.  We opted instead for a delightful choice of SALMON!  With the asparagus and homemade hollandaise, it just seemed to make the most sense.  We had roasted baby potatoes, mashed potatoes, kale and beans, dressing, homemade baked mac & cheese, spinach and mushrooms, and a darling dessert display.  My little brother created a table centerpiece from fresh-picked lilacs from the yard. Our dinner was fab, and I received the greatest compliment of all time.

My great-great Grandmother, Ella, used to let me tinker around her kitchen during summers for many many years.  She was the original rock-star chef in my world.  Grandmother taught me to bake, how to make sauces and gravies and roux, and how to “fix” my seasoning errors.  She was a domestic goddess like no other, and I miss her dearly.  I was unbelievably fortunate enough to have her in my world until the age of 18, and I would not be me without her influence.  When she departed this earth physically, she left a bevy of fanatical grand-daughters who swear by Queen in the kitchen.  We WILL rock you!

Grandmother Ella’s daughter, my Aunt Lue, is 92.  She’s living with my mom, and I had the privilege of spending Easter with her at my Mom’s home.  And you know 92 year old ladies are not filtered… Aunt Lue says what’s on her mind WITHOUT fail!  I love every second of it!  When she was eating dinner, she said, “Honey, this is so good!  This tastes like Mama’s food!”

Let me just say, I cried.  More than once.

There isn’t a greater compliment in the world.

The Menu Journey Begins

I’ve deemed myself the “armchair chef” today.  I own the cloying voice that says, “No, I didn’t go to culinary school, and no, I’m not a REAL chef, but I know what I like, and this isn’t quite right… Let’s talk about this… what about this instead of that?”  or most irritating:  ”How do they do it at The Four Seasons?”

Our hotel chef and I will be working on new and improved banquet menus, and I’m certain he wants to kill me. Creating guest experiences is a personal delight of mine, and I’m pretty lucky to have the opportunity to do it for a living. What’s the WOW factor, anyway? It’s different for every group, but remains: the breathtaking moment when the planning guest enters his/her ballroom and says, “WOW!”

And I usually gasp a little – due to sheer excitement.
